Photodynamic Therapy, or PDT, is combination treatment with a photosensitizing agent (a pharmaceutical such as Levulan™ or Metvix™) which is activated with a light source to trigger a chemical change in the pharmaceutical.
Light sources are a red light, the Aktilite, Blu U, IPL or other light sources. Treatment involves applying a clear non-toxic fluid to the skin and then activating it after one to three hours with the chosen light source. It is an excellent treatment for photo-aging, acne, rosacea, actinic keratosis and non-melanoma skin cancers on the face and body. It has the added benefit over other common treatments in improving skin texture and tone (sheen, fine lines and pore size). There may be some discomfort during the treatment and peeling or crusting of the targeted lesions 3-7 days later. For many, the enhanced cosmetic results and the ability to combine skin cancer treatment with overall skin health and cosmetic rejuvenation are worth the added downtime.
Note: Two treatments may be required.
