One of your good friends has recently received a Botox treatment and can’t stop smiling about the results! Her delight is infectious and you’re starting to consider if Botox is right for you too. Perhaps you’ve noticed a few frown lines becoming deeper around your brows or maybe you think it’s time for a little lift.
No matter what, you probably have questions about the procedure before you’re ready to say “yes.” After all, you know your body best. Here are some questions you can bring to your consult with Dr. Sweeney that will help make you an informed patient.
Who Should I Trust?
Look for someone who is qualified and experienced. Take advantage of consultation and ask for their certifications or any images and samples of their previous work. Get to know them and see for yourself if they’re knowledgeable about their products and the proper procedures. If possible, ask others what they have to say about the practitioner. What works for them might also work for you. Dr. Sweeney has been treating patients for over 13 years.
How Do I Prepare for a Treatment?
Be prepared to share your medical history during a consultation. Certain medications and previous cosmetic or other medical procedures might influence your individual treatment. This is a “lunchtime” procedure- there is no specific pre-treatment protocols.
What is the Procedure Like?
Dr. Sweeney will guide you during the procedure letting you know when to relax or move your muscles while the BOTOX is being administered. The procedure typically lasts 10-20 minutes depending on the number of areas planned for treatment. You can expect to continue your daily routine afterwards. Some people may have concerns about how the injections feel; typically it is rated as a 1-2 out of 10 on the discomfort scale.
How Long is the Recovery Period?
The great thing about Botox is the minimal recovery time, and by minimal we mean practically none at all. For the best results, remain upright, and do not engage in physical activity or rub the treated areas for the next four hours. You may have a small raised area at the injection sites which can last up to an hour.
Are There Side Effects?
As with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects. These are very uncommon in Dr. Sweeney’s experience and may include relaxation of muscles not targeted in the treatments. This may cause a temporary effect in brow or lid height or mouth symmetry. Preventing adverse effects is why Dr. Sweeney recommends post-treatment instruction as described above.
What Concerns can BOTOX Treat?
Frowning for the forehead and mouth, forehead lines, brow and neckline lift
and smile, lip, bunny and necklines are some of the most common treatment areas.
How Long Does it Last?
Botox treatment typically lasts 4-6 months; the duration varies based on the patient and the area treated. Retreatment is recommended before full muscle movement returns to ensure long term results are achieved. Glabellar frown lines- the number 11’s, typically last longer after regular the treatments.
